The The Waterway5k-10k Run/Walk is organized to promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds for women who can not afford to have a screening mammogram.

All of the proceeds from the Waterway5k go to the Albemarle Hospital Foundation and are earmarked for women (and men) in the seven county service area (Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans) who cannot afford a mammogram.

All women aged 40 and over should get a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year. Women at particularly high risk should talk with their doctor about more frequent screening and starting screening earlier.

Goals

While breast cancer cannot be prevented, some studies suggest that physical activity, good nutrition and certain drugs may lower a woman's risk of getting the disease.
